Care & Cleaning – Silver-Plated Articles
- Routine cleaning: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and mild dish soap. Rinse immediately and dry thoroughly with a soft lint-free cloth — never leave wet.
- Polishing: Use a dedicated silver-plating polish (e.g. Hagerty Silver Polish, Silvo) applied with a soft cloth in gentle circular motions. Avoid abrasive cloths or scouring pads which will damage the plating.
- Tarnish removal: For light tarnish, the aluminium foil + baking soda + hot water method works well — line a bowl with foil, add 1 tbsp baking soda per litre of hot water, submerge for 5–10 minutes, then rinse and dry immediately.
- Avoid: Dishwasher, bleach, lemon juice, vinegar, or prolonged soaking — these will accelerate plating wear.
- Storage: Wrap in acid-free tissue or a silver storage cloth to slow tarnishing. Keep away from rubber bands and humid environments.
- Glass plate: Wash separately by hand with warm soapy water. Do not submerge the silver base in water for extended periods.
A rare and beautiful Art Nouveau treasure — once it’s gone, it’s gone.
