Vintage Gmundner Keramik Butter Dish — Austria

A Classic of the Austrian Table

This charming domed butter dish is a quintessential piece of Gmundner Keramik, Austria’s beloved folk pottery tradition. Comprising a domed cloche lid with a round knob handle and a matching round saucer base, it is decorated throughout in the iconic Landlinie pattern — bold, hand-painted teal-green wavy stripes on a crisp white ground, one of the most enduring and recognisable motifs in the Gmundner repertoire.

The interior of the dome is left in plain white glaze, as is traditional, keeping the focus on the expressive exterior decoration. The piece sits comfortably on the table and is fully functional for everyday use or display.

Provenance & Maker

The base bears the authentic Gmundner Keramik crown and tower backstamp in black — the maker’s mark used by the Gmunden pottery in Upper Austria, confirming its origin and period. Gmundner Keramik has been produced continuously since the 17th century and remains one of Austria’s most celebrated ceramic traditions.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or restoration. The glaze is bright and even, with the characteristic hand-painted variation that makes each Gmundner piece unique. Fully functional for use or display.
