Vintage Gmunden Serving Plate — Gmundner Keramik, Austria

A Classic of Austrian Folk Ceramics

This generous rectangular serving plate is a fine example of Gmundner Keramik, Austria's beloved folk pottery tradition dating back to the 17th century. Produced in the lakeside town of Gmunden in Upper Austria, these pieces are celebrated for their bold, hand-painted underglaze decoration and their enduring place in Central European domestic culture.

The plate features a lively, rhythmic pattern of teal-green swirls, loops, and arches — applied freehand by a skilled decorator, giving each piece its own unique character. The crisp white ground contrasts beautifully with the deep teal pigment, making this as striking on a wall as it is on a table.

Provenance & Maker

The reverse bears the printed blue backstamp of Gmundner Keramik, confirming its Austrian origin. The style and stamp are consistent with mid-20th century production. Gmundner Keramik pieces are actively collected across Europe and increasingly sought after internationally for their artisanal quality and folkloric charm.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or restoration visible. Light age-appropriate patina to the glaze. Fully functional for display or occasional use.
